Laminitis Information & Treatments

LAMINITIS (Low grade) – Feed L94 for ten days then follow on by feeding Rexflo on a regular everyday basis. When things are back to normal.

LAMINITIS (Acute) – As soon as you can start feeding L94 and Setback Salts for at least 10 days, these can safely be fed with Bute prescribed by the Vet.
LAMINITIS (DUE TO CUSHINGS)  See also Cushings   – Due to the unpredictability of Cushings disease, Laminitis is an ever-present danger to Cushing’s horses. To this end feed L94 (Liquid) with Setback Salts every day as part of each bucket feed, raising the amount whenever there is a strong likelihood of an onset.

SUPPORTIVE COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING  L94, SETBACK SALTS & REXFLO

REGULAR COMPLEMENTARY FEEDING  EQUINOURISH & WESTERN SALTS

L94 is a highly effective lymphatic, renal, cholagogue and liver tonic. It can be fed to all Equines including breeding stock, youngstock and competition horses on a routine or occasional basis.
RACE AND COMPETITION HORSES. Feed L94 to maintain form to withstand the rigours of training minimising the day to day set backs that are inevitably encountered and that if not overcome as they arise can accumulate to such an extent as to cause a drop in performance which although imperceptable at first can manifest itself in disappointing mid season results and possible time out.

Horse Laminitis

Feed L94 as a general ‘ Pick- me- up’ when horses are not ‘quite right. Horse will always benefit from a 10 day course of L94 and longer if necessary feed at the commencement of training and between races/events also feed during/after the following occasions/occurrences:

  • “Off form” Non specific poor deterioration inperformancelaminitis
  • Whilst Worming Oedemas/Filled legs
  • Azotoria/Tying up* Laminitis
  • Antibiotic/Steroid treatment Ragwort/plant poisoning
  • Unthriftiness & General debility Liver Fluke
  • Anaemia* Low/Incorrect ratio WBC*
  • Hepatitis Liver degeneration
  • Non-specific Lameness Pancreatic and splenic malfunction
  • Aflatoxicosis Leptospirosis.
  • Convalescence after disease Heavy Metal toxicity
  • Vasculitis Inadvertent feeding of mouldy or rancid feed.

Laminitis Cure

L94 has a powerful choleretic action that increases the secretion and flow of bile from the liver and improves fat digestion. By its hepato-protective action L94 helps to maintain the parenchyma against the toxic effects of anthelmintics, antibiotics, chemical drugs and food toxins. A large body of blood proteins (over 20), are initiated in the liver, and are intimately involved in nearly all aspects of immunity and nonspecific resistance. They form two types of self-mediated cascade reactions to antigens, antibody-antigen complexes, dead tissue and the like, and are almost solely able to initiate the rupture and killing of bacteria. The protein strings they form around foreign substances are the main “hooks” used for absorption by macrophages as they digest and clean up. L94 has a positive effect on liver glycogen and helps to inhibitf free radical induced DNA damage.
Helps restore and maintain normal Lymph tempo avoiding calcium and iron presipitation and toxic build up.
Feed L94 for bile secretion deficiency and to increase the livers’ acceptance of tocopherol (Vitamin E). This factor may well be particularly important following exertion trauma when oxidative stress causes damage to cell membranes resulting in ‘leaky’ cells. Along with the Elephants and Black Rhinos, Equines produce bile with a different composition to humans and other mammals and absorption of tocopherols (Vitamin E family), the main anti-oxidant, is slow and inefficient and there is sometimes not enough time following depletion of tocopherols before oxidative stress occurs again. This is a major factor in ‘less-than-optimum performance’ and/or more serious muscular impairment.
L94 is blend of plant extracts known for their hepatoprotective and hepatogenic properties; their beneficial effect on the regulation of mitochondrial enzymes improves energy production for body functions. It helps improve smooth endoplasmic reticulum improving protein synthesis. It has a gentle remedial action on the kidneys, spleen and pancreas and is a has a Cholagogue and choleretic action clearing bile stasis and improving fat digestion all of which is reflected in circulation, skin and haircoat health.
There are very many reasons for feeding L94 one important one is that tiny leaks in the lining of small intestine play a role in diseases as diverse as COPD and Laminitis and is an outstanding reason for undulation in general health and performance. The gut lining is meant to not only to absorb food, but to act as a barrier to keep out invading pathogens and is the very first part of the immune system. Know as the ‘Intestinal Fortitude factor’ it is where the mucosal layer of a healthy gut filters out microorganisms and undigested proteins. When this lining gets damaged, by worms, tinea, acidosis, rancid oils & fats, pain killers, bacteria, candida, spray chemicals, pesticides and pollutants in the feed the lining loses its integrity. This is when the door is open to let in the bacteria, the viruses, the toxic discharge from parasites – even undigested food molecules which can activate the immune system (and also the autoimmune system). This loss of integrity is known as “leaky gut syndrome“. L94 helps bile secretion defiency, bile is a greenish-yellow alkaline sunstance secreted by the liver which emulsifies fat and prevent putrefaction in the intestines and is an aid to pancreatic juices.
Various toxins can make their way through the barrier of the intestinal lining when it is permeable. Those toxins travel to the liver where they are detoxified. The liver has phases of detoxification to deal with eliminating foreign substances (phase I and II), but when the detoxification processes of the liver are impeded, it results in manifestation of disease, depending on where the toxins exert their effect. If the liver is overloaded and can’t remove the toxins, they can recirculate or deposit in the body. Either way, they upset the apple cart. The toxins can recirculate to the intestinal area where they increase the permeability of the intestinal lining even more. The relation to toxic overload on the liver and leaky gut is cyclical: A leaky gut will allow more toxins to enter the system, and, conversely, toxic overload of the liver increases leaky gut. Horses are exposed to an amazing load of toxins in the course of everyday encounters, from environmental poisons to metabolic wastes that are not efficiently eliminated. The more toxic insults, the more they loose the ability to ward off disease-causing agents. Feeding L94 helps relieve this situation by a) protecting the immune barrier of the gut, and b) providing optimal detoxification aid for waste removal.

SETBACK SALTS –  Registered Client Information

Composition – 30% Vegetable derived impure potassium salts (Yavakshara), 64% Methyl-Sulphonyl-Methane (MSM), 6% Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).

SETBACK SALTS specifically provide certain essential minerals in a form that is as close as possible to those found existing in the natural foods that the horse has evolved on. This helps the body to recognise such minerals as ‘food’ so they are then absorbed and assimilated more efficiently by horses that have suffered a setback and a weakened metabolism than nutrients from mined, inorganic sources.

Feed whenever a setback has occurred for at least five days or longer particularly if the setback has resulted in a change of routine, sudden boxrest or for some reason a sudden drop in forage intake has occurred. FEED SETBACK SALTS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE IN RESPONSE TO:

Tying Up & after the virus (with L94)                                        Sudden itching

Sudden tender footedness                                                            Urine retention and scanty or scalding urine

Off form following an upset or trauma                                      Acute rheumatism & immobility

Soil licking, Wood chewing and Dung eating                          Metal licking

Lymphangitis & swollen glands & oedemas

To swiftly help redress cellular balance, cellular integrity and cellular energy:

SETBACK SALTS can be fed to help relieve itching and acts on the vascular system thus helping to normalise elevated pulse rate in the feet.

Feed SETBACK SALTS the very day you notice a problem however slight especially if the horse or pony has a history of laminitis or is inexplicably off form. Feeding SETBACK SALTS will do no harm even if it is a false alarm.

Older horses and those suffering from arthritis, metabolic syndrome, Navicular syndrome, Cushing’s,  Equine Metabolic Syndrome, lymphatic and circulatory problems are very susceptible to change and suffer stress especially if such occasions occur twice or more within quick succession or when the second occasion occurs before recovery from the first which in such animals can be slow. Such stresses can trigger laminitis and other mal-conditions. Timely feeding of SETBACK SALTS can help offset such problems.

Included in SETBACK SALTS is the highest quality Yavakshara, hand-made from green spikes of barley, sun dried ignited and the ash repeatedly filtered to obtain a natural occurring complex of Potassium salts. These are then blended with low molecular weight naturally occurring Sulphur as found in small quantities in most green plant foodstuffs and algae and some fruits but can be easily destroyed with dehydration and heat. Sulphur is an essential major element found in all living organisms and is present in body fluids and tissues. It helps the body heal itself, reducing inflammation, improving joint mobility and maintaining the integrity of lung tissue. MSM contributes sulphur to the disulphide bonds that are essential for the proper conformation of hair, horn and connective tissue. Hormones and antibodies receive sulphur from MSM.

Footnote – Depending of course on their age, degree of health and constitution horses can usually cope with a non-life threatening trauma, their Achilles Heel is when they encounter a second trauma physical, mental or environmental before they have quite recovered from their first trauma. The second and subsequent traumas do not have to be that bad but because of the circumstances their effects can be magnified many times.  The first trauma will have affected Cellular balance, until restored the horse is particularly vulnerable it is like a hermit crab between shells. When looking for a reason for a problem look for two traumas either the first or the second can be seemingly quite innocuous.

SETBACK SALTS GREATER (Yavakshara, MSM & Vitamin C) is essentially Setback Salts with added minerals and vitamins.

SETBACK SALTS contains  high quality Yavakshara, hand-prepared from green spikes of barley, sun dried, ignited and the ash repeatedly filtered to obtain a natural occurring complex of Potassium salts also known as Impure Potassium Salts . These are then blended with low molecular weight naturally occurring Sulphur as found in small quantities in most green plant foodstuffs and algae. Sulphur is an essential major element found in all living organisms and is present in body fluids and tissues. It helps the body heal itself, reducing inflammation, improving joint mobility and maintaining the integrity of lung tissue by opening up metabolic pathways. Methyl-Sulphonyl-Methane contributes sulphur to the disulphide bonds that are essential for the proper conformation of hair, horn and connective tissue. Hormones and antibodies receive sulphur from Methyl-Sulphonyl-Methane.

Feed SETBACK SALTS the very day you notice a problem however slight especially if the horse or pony has a history of laminitis or is inexplicably off form.

Setback Salts  assist circulation; help optimise cellular balance and help recover from a bout of laminitis (with L94). To help strengthen capillaries (with GoldenOil or TPGS-5) regain/maintain positive cellular status, help blood diffusion and overall metabolic function.

Prevent Laminitis

REXFLO is formulated to help maintain a healthy circulatory system and is about optimum levels of lymph reaching the cells and waste products draining from the cells and flowing out to be efficiently eliminated thus helping to maintain a healthy digestive system.
Whilst the essential features of the digestive system of the Equine are the same as that of all mammals, evolution has imposed a number of features upon it that are unique to the species. Such features call for a greater reliance on the horse’s liver and pancreas to help maintain a clean and clear digestive and lymphatic system upon on which it so much depends.
Include REXFLO every day with the regular bucket feed to help maintain freedom from the following common problems which originate from the occurrence of a than optimum digestive processes.
Low grade lameness
The development of subcutaneous waste deposits (fat pads)
Fluid retention
Chronic Laminitis
Lymphatic torpidity
Circulatory disorders in the feet
Hepatic degeneration
General enfeeblement of body and spirit
Possible non-specific digestive problems

Feed when necessary as a follow on from L94 may also be fed with H29 and Setback Salts

The formula is devoid of any really harmful side effects however the following may occur –
1. Urination routine may well be upset and initially be more frequent
2. Blood fats will increase initially but then fall.

MAIN ACTION OF ASSISTANCE
Cholagogue – increases bile production by up to 60 %
Liver restorative
Assists digestion of fats
Tonic
Stimulates metabolism
Reduces levels of fats in the blood
Anti-hyperlipidaemia

Aids cell metabolism
Fluid retention
Hypercholesterolemia
Detoxifier
Circulatory stimulant & peripheral vasodilation.
Haemostatic

Notes on Itching – Itching is a symptom of many conditions. The underlying cause of generalised itching can often be due to less that optimum Liver and Pancreatic function including a lowering of immune responses to candida albicans and other virulent fungal infections. Itching is the effort of the central nervous system to move a deeper disturbance towards the skin where irritation may well be distressing but where it is least damaging.

General notes – Lymph convey to the blood the final products of digestion and receives from the blood waste products of metabolism. Lymph fluid loaded with waste, excess protein etc is sucked into the lymph tubes to be filtered by the spleen and lymph nodes. A number of disorders arise when the fluid in overburdened by toxaemia, out of solution minerals etc. Poor drainage and enlarged nodes (glands) with un-eliminated waste slows down the flow extending the time (dwell time) that toxins remain in contact with tissue doing exponential damage. It is often said that If the lymph is circulating freely it is almost impossible for horses to become sick. The lymphatic system is even capable of building up an immunity to further infections but on the other hand lymphatic torpidity can be the very start of illness and susceptibility to disease from being “off Form” to being in constant poor health and immobile. REXFLO helps maintain lymphatic tempo, pH changes can quickly encourage waste oxides travelling back for eventual elimination to come out of solution and begin the first processes of calcification (like the drip from the top of a cave forming a stalagmite on the floor) constricting capillaries and forming cellulite deposits (fat pads) that in turn cause further dams to the circulation.

REXFLO supports vital liver function and most importantly it is an excellent cholagogue that gently increases both the concentration and the secretion of Bilirubin in the duodenum it helps stimulate pancreatic enzymes and the digestive system in general. Since the horse has no gall bladder and therefore no reserves of bile it is directly dependant on its actual hepatic output day and night. This dependency makes the horse less tolerant of undulations in liver function than other animals. Other factors also serve to make the Equine a hepatically complicated animal, besides Equines living much longer than other creatures and their bile being different, when mature their liver capacity is smaller in proportion to their size than other mammals.

Rexflo contains a large amount of extraordinary therapeutic substances known as flavonoids and is able to protect the liver and the horse against poisons in three primary ways.

FIRSTLY by acting on the cell membrane of the liver and probably most other cells of the horse’s body by stabilising and strengthening by actively competing for the cell membrane structure so that toxins are unable to affect cell membranes in its presence allowing regeneration of the liver cells to take place.

SECONDLY by a further hepatoprotective mechanism of action involving the enterohepatic circuit. The Equine has no intermediate reserve of bile so there is an immediacy between the liver and the the production of bile, the greenish-yellow alkaline substance secreted by the liver which emulsifies and prevents putrefaction in the intestines and aid pancreatic function. The enterohepatic circuit is old bile returning to the liver loaded with impurities and waste for detoxification being exchanged for fresh new bile. Rexflo plays a vital role in helping maintain and rejuvenate this action as it is a particularly effective cholagogue increasing the production and volume of bile flow by as much as four times normal in a 12 hour period. Poor liver function and bile deficiency in both amount and concentration means poisons, pollutants, and drug residues not being exchanged properly and except for some biliary excretion simply moving backwards and forwards increasing the amount of liver damage on each pass, this is known as the Ping Pong effect the latter word being a clue to it occurring. Toxicity produced through the enterohepatic circuit usually takes considerable time to develop, the larger and heavier the organism the longer it takes to produce toxicity. Rexflo when fed firstly interrupts the primary absorption of toxins then helps prevent their reabsorption due to enterohepatic circulation. Cells that are not yet contaminated are protected from circulating toxins and act as centres for the generation of new liver cells. With time, complete restoration of the liver is possible.

THIRDLY Rexflo also helps the regeneration of destroyed liver tissue by stimulating cellular protein synthesis and subsequently new cells can be built and nourished.
Although the liver already possesses the ability to regenerate itself its capacity to do so is slowed by certain toxic substances, viruses, fatty degeneration and age Rexflo encourages the regeneration of cells destroyed during both normal detoxification process and the deleterious effects of air, water and food-borne toxins.

REXFLO is a cellular regenerator, peripheral vasodilator improving the strength and tone of capillaries, elasticity of the walls of blood vessels and opening up surface areas enabling more blood to be circulated to assist tissue build up and tissue strength. REXFLO helps elevate white cell production and liver glycogen reserves essential for red cell manufacture and for tissues dependant on sufficient liver glycogen presence.

Swellings and Low grade lameness can often be due to less than optimum circulation to the feet. Nutrients and oxygen destined for the feet fail to fully reach certain areas causing tissue to become poor and necrotic developing an arterial shunt where the area is partially avoided and the blood finds another way back to the heart. These starved areas become weak with transient low levels of vasculitis and Lymphangitis occurring resulting in tenderness and pain when weight bearing on hard or stony ground, in turn concussion causes more inflammation and greater obstruction of nutrients and elimination of metabolites.

It is commonly thought that it is possible to tell when a horse is dehydrated by looking at it, that may be so but only after 4 to 5% of the body weight in fluid has already been lost can dehydration be detected by skin elasticity. In the 500KG horse this which represents some 20 Kg of fluid so it is prudent to always supply some extra sodium levels above that which is naturally contained in the forage and other feeds. Levels do not have to be precise.  Appetite for salt can vary quite widely even between siblings. Western salts helps to ensure horses and ponies drink normally  When fed everyday feeding a 25 ml spoonful per day in conjunction with  good quality forage  usually provides sufficient Sodium per day for the inactive 400-500Kg Bodyweight horse in winter. For the more active horse in summer feed extra sodium & potassium in the form of an electrolyte (Electros) and with any pronounced sweating.

WESTERN SALTS are in powder form and devoid of any overall cereal or by product carrier Include in the bucket fed feed.

When fed in addition to adequate amounts of forage containing average levels of minerals and vitamins a horse being fed a spoonful (40g) of WESTERN SALTS TM will consume sufficient minerals and vitamins to meet and safely exceed all published NRC (National Research Council) Washington recommendations.

Please remember, laminitis can be fatal and if not caught quick will lead to your horse being destroyed.
